This discussion will explore two major health organizations, their purpose, and the various ways they influence the profession of nursing. The nursing profession is a multifaceted sector of healthcare that continually strives to improve itself for the betterment of the public with whom they have a social contract to protect, and the nurses working within the field. Understanding which resources influence and advocate for nursing encourage the profession to move forward in meaningful ways.

The World Health Organizations (WHO) is likely one of the most familiar organizations to the public. The WHO is responsible for many vital operations that affect healthcare worldwide. The most significant elements of their work providing international leadership, facilitating research programs, establishing standards and expectations, and conveying how evidence-based practice can integrate into healthcare. The WHO is a major resource for the global health community. However, they are not limited in that aspect. Through their work they are strong advocates for nursing by acknowledging encouraging the autonomy and role of nursing in healthcare. Nursing is a collaborative partner in the mission of the WHO. By following recommendations and guidance from the WHO, nursing can help focus research and professional goals. The WHO also helps to disseminate important information about global health that is accessible to nursing (Ventura, Mendes, Fumincelli, & Trevizan, 2015).

Another notable health organization that plays a role in the advancement of nursing is the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). NAM is reliable source of information, education, and standardization for the nation and global health community. The organization has a strong commitment to science and research. NAM has established a review of standards for nursing, provided nursing education, and sponsored various nursing scholarships. NAM is a strong advocate for nursing, nursing research, and the professions involvement in the advancement of healthcare and medicine (Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions, n.d.).

In summation, there are many organizations that contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession in a myriad of ways. The NAM and the WHO are both reputable, reliable, and accountable organizations that are recognized nationally and internationally (Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions, n.d.). Each organization has their own mission, goals, and functions. However, each one makes significant contributions to nursing in their own way. Through the prioritization of education, research, standardization, resource allocation, and reliable expertise, these organizations serve to support and enhance professional nursing.

Nursing practice, education, and research are heavily influenced by governmental and nongovernmental health care organizations. The purpose of this discussion is to provide information for two organizations: The Joint Commission (TJC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The purpose of TJC is to ensure quality and safety in health care. TJC evaluates nursing performance indicators such as safety and quality improvement. Therefore, nurses must practice in accordance with TJC’s standards. For example, nurses must implement core performance measures. In addition, TJC sets educational requirements for organizations. For instance, according to TJC (2019), nursing education requirements for Comprehensive Stroke Certification include eight hours of stroke education yearly. Nursing research, such as research for clinical trials, must also comply with TJC’s standards. For example, according to TJC (2017), Comprehensive Stroke Centers must be performing research that is approved by the Institutional Review Board. As explained in the lecture, TJC coordinates with the government to promote quality improvement, evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, patient advocacy, and nursing education. Therefore, TJC serves as a steward for political activism, a crusader for advocacy, and a resource for health care organizations. For this reason, I am a nurse who supports TJC.

The purpose of the WHO is to regulate and promote global health. The WHO often indirectly affects nursing practice. For example, the WHO participates in ongoing health research. Findings from such research fosters change in current practice and development of new practice. For example, a study by Lazo-Porras et al. (2020) examined the effectiveness and safety of the WHO’s antibiotic regimen for leprosy compared to other regimens. Furthermore, the WHO serves as an educational resource for nurses. Additionally, the WHO provides current, credible information for nursing research. Moreover, the WHO supports advocacy for underserved populations, another component of nursing excellence. Lastly, the WHO promotes activism and provides nurses with opportunities to implement change on a global level. According to Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, and O’Grady (2015), nurses, who are already in a powerful position to advocate for change, can only be effective in their position through experience and practice. I support the WHO for their commitment to promoting health universally.

In summary, health care is greatly influenced by governmental and nongovernmental organizations, such as these nonprofits described above. Particularly, nursing practice, education, and research are affected. Thus, as nurses, we should familiarize ourselves with these organizations and champion their values.
