:Japanese poetry & Chinese poetry
In Chinese history, Shi is regarded as the root of literature. It is to be lived that the occurrence of Shi is inspired by working, the sound that people made to cheer each other up. The rhythmic sound that people made then developed with religion, the animism that primitive Chinese believed in, to worship the spirits. The oldest existing collection of poetry occurs in the Spring and Autumn period by Confucius. The primitive Shi has eight syllabus for each sentence, with interval separating the sentence by half. The rhyming is at the end of each sentence, and are in pair. The form of Shi then developed into various type: for example, with five words and seven words, there are quatrains, eight sentences, and poems with more than eight sentences (these are also called tempo). The representative figures of the quatrains are Li Bai and Wang Wei. Li Bai lived in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. His poems demonstrated his heroic personality, and his love to the mountains and rivers of the motherland. He has traveled all over the north and south, and wrote a lot of magnificent poems that praise the famous mountains and rivers. He is also a great romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty, known as the “Poetry Fairy” by future generations. Most of Wang Wei’s poems are idyllic works of landscape. While depicting the natural beauty, he reveals the leisurely fun in the idle life. Wang Wei’s scenery writing poems are usually in the form of five words quatrains. Due to the limited words, the language needs exquisite, and the syllables are relatively soothing. The timing when ci originated is inconclusive. Ci was developed in Tang and flourished in Song. Ci has a higher requirement for rhyming, and the number of words (syllabus) in sentence varies. The Fu originated in the Warring States Period, and the ancient literary movement in the Tang Dynasty reformed the parallel script to form a literary Fu. But Fu did not attract the attention of modern scholars.
Haiku is a branch of ancient Chinese poetry. This form of poetry developed after Japaneseization. At the same time, it becomes daily poems in Japan. Haiku is a Japanese short poem composed of “five-seven-five-seven-seven” syllabus, a total of seventeen characters; with three sentences and seventeen sounds as the first, the first sentence is five-tone, the second sentence is seven-tone, and the last sentence is five-tone. The requirements are strict and limited by the “seasonal language”. The so-called seasonal language refers to the seasonal language used to express spring, summer, autumn, winter and new year. Waka is a kind of Japanese poetry, which was developed through the continuous Japaneseization of Yuefu poetry in ancient China. The short song has five sentences and thirty-one syllables. It is a traditional Japanese stereotyped poem in the order of five-seven-five-seven-seven. Matsuo Basho was a haikuist in the early Edo period, and his recognized merit was to push the haiku form to the top.
